By air
- Dhangadhi Airport (DHI) is the nearest domestic airport, roughly 60–70 km east via the East–West Highway.
- Nepalgunj Airport (KEP) is further east and connects to more routes.
- On the Indian side, Pantnagar (PGH) and Delhi (DEL) are common gateways, followed by a road or rail leg to Banbasa/Tanakpur.
From the airport, take a taxi or a reserved jeep to Mahendranagar. Confirm schedules, as flights can be seasonal.
By road
Mahendranagar sits on the Mahendra/East–West Highway, the backbone of the Nepali Terai.
- From Kathmandu: a long but scenic drive west, often broken up over one or two nights.
- From Dhangadhi: a straightforward highway drive east.
- From Banbasa/Tanakpur (India): cross at Gaddachauki and continue into town.
Buses and shared jeeps leave from the Mahendranagar bus park through the day.
By rail
The nearest convenient railway station is Tanakpur on the Indian side, about 20 km from Banbasa. From Tanakpur, take a bus, shared jeep or taxi to Banbasa, then cross at Gaddachauki.
There is no passenger railway into Mahendranagar itself — plan the last leg by road.

Getting to Shuklaphanta
