Where exactly do I cross the border at Mahendranagar?
At the Gaddachauki checkpoint on the Nepali side, opposite Banbasa in India. You cross the Mahakali river bridge between the two.
What are the border opening hours?
Typically early morning until around 21:00, but hours change. Check the day's schedule and confirm before travelling — see the Border page.
Can I walk across, or do I need a vehicle?
You can cross on foot or by rickshaw. Vehicles are allowed with the correct documents and permits.
Is it safe to cross at night?
Plan to cross during daylight and well before closing. Avoid crossing late at night, especially with luggage or children.
Visa & documents
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Nepal?
No. Indian nationals can enter Nepal without a visa and should carry a valid Indian photo ID.
Can foreign nationals get a visa at Gaddachauki?
Gaddachauki is an authorised entry point, but availability for your nationality can vary. Applying for an e-Visa online in advance is the safest option.
What documents should I carry?
Passport (six months validity), visa or e-Visa confirmation, onward travel details, and a photocopy of your passport. Indian and Nepali nationals can use national photo ID.

What currency is used in Mahendranagar?
The Nepali Rupee (NPR). Indian Rupees are widely accepted near the border, especially ₹100 and smaller notes.

Yes, several banks and ATMs operate in town. Not all accept foreign cards, so carry some cash as backup.
