Do you need a visa?
Indian nationals
No visa is required for Indian citizens travelling to Nepal. Carry a valid Indian photo ID (passport, voter ID or driving licence).
Nepali nationals
Free movement across the border. Carry a Nepali citizenship certificate or passport.
SAARC nationals
Many SAARC nationals receive a free or reduced-fee visa on arrival. Rules vary by country — confirm before travel.
Other nationals
A Nepal tourist visa is required. Apply for an e-Visa online or get a visa on arrival at an authorised entry point such as Gaddachauki.

e-Visa and visa on arrival
- Apply online on the official Nepal Department of Immigration e-Visa portal.
- Print or save the confirmation.
- Present it at the immigration desk on arrival (Tribhuvan Airport or an authorised land border such as Gaddachauki).
- Pay in US dollars cash or by card where accepted, and keep the receipt.
If you are unsure whether Gaddachauki issues your visa type, apply online in advance.
Immigration at Gaddachauki
The immigration office at Gaddachauki handles entry and exit stamps for foreign nationals crossing between Nepal and India. Bring:
- Passport valid for at least six months
- Completed arrival/departure card
- Visa (or e-Visa confirmation)
- Proof of onward travel and accommodation if asked

Extensions, overstay and rules
- Tourist visas can usually be extended for a fee at immigration offices.
- Overstaying carries daily fines and can lead to problems on exit.
- Work, volunteering or business requires the correct permit — a tourist visa is not enough.
- Keep your entry stamp safe; you will need it when you leave.
