Money, Banks & Exchange
What currency to carry, where to change money, and what to expect at ATMs near the border.
What money to carry
The official currency is the Nepali Rupee (NPR). Carry a mix of cash and a card: cash is essential for rickshaws, small eateries, park fees and markets, while larger hotels and shops may accept cards.
Near the border, Indian Rupees are widely accepted — but see the note on notes below. US dollars are useful for visa fees but not for everyday shopping.
Indian currency notes
Indian currency circulates freely around the border, but not all notes are treated equally. Some larger Indian denominations have at times been restricted in Nepal, and acceptance can vary shop to shop.
- Prefer ₹100 and smaller notes for daily spending.
- Ask before assuming a large note will be accepted.
- Rules on which Indian notes are valid in Nepal change — verify with Nepal Rastra Bank or your bank.
Banks & ATMs
Banks and ATMs operate in Bhimdatta/Mahendranagar, mostly around the main market and the road to the border. International cards work at some machines but not all — try a bank ATM rather than a standalone one, and withdraw during daylight and banking hours.
Money changers
Money changers cluster near the Gaddachauki border and in the main bazaar. Compare rates between two or three, count your money before leaving the counter, and ask for a receipt. Avoid changing money on the street with unofficial touts.
Cards & mobile payments
- Nepal: eSewa, Khalti and mobile banking are common. Cards work at bigger hotels, restaurants and some shops.
- India (Banbasa side): UPI is standard; cards are accepted at larger businesses.
- Small vendors and rickshaws are cash-only.
Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
