Shuklaphanta National Park protects some of Nepal's finest Terai grassland: a mosaic of open plains, sal forest, riverine forest and oxbow lakes. It is best known for the world's largest herd of swamp deer (barasingha), which gathers in impressive numbers in the dry season.
Tigers, elephants, leopards, crocodiles and more than 400 bird species also live here. The park is a Ramsar wetland site and one of the most accessible national parks in Nepal.
A jeep safari at dawn, or a guided walk where permitted, is the best way to see wildlife.
